Welcome from the Head of Sixth Form

The Sixth Form years are the most exciting and inspiring phase of your school education. The Sixth Form at Southend High School for Boys is a community of around 365 students. It is a warm and down-to-earth environment centred in a separate, purpose-built, building which was opened in 1998. We have a spacious common room with its own designated canteen, various study rooms, ICT suite and a fabulous new library.

With A Level results that are consistently the best in the area, and with ever-increasing numbers of students successfully applying to Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group universities, our track record in helping students reach their potential is clear to see. However, it is not just academic excellence that forms the foundation of our Sixth Form: we are determined to help our students develop into well-rounded, moral, and fulfilled individuals, whose contributions to society go far beyond the academic. In order to achieve this, we provide some of the best pastoral care in the area, with a dedicated team of staff on hand to support our students, not only with their studies, but with their emotional and personal development as well. Indeed, our Personal Development and Health & Wellbeing programmes are something that we are particularly proud of, with a wide range of activities from primary school volunteering, social sport, and yoga and mindfulness, to Extended Project Qualification and Duke of Edinburgh.

The Sixth Form is an integral part of whole school life at SHSB. Our Year 12 and Year 13 students work hard to contribute to the lower school in a variety of ways: they form our prefect team, who help the day to day running of the school. They provide mentoring to younger students, passing on their knowledge and passion for their subjects to future generations. They run a multitude of organisations such as the Fairtrade Committee and the Charity Committee, which each year raises thousands of pounds for local and international charities. Our students go on to great things when they leave us, and it is our mission to ensure they leave us as well-rounded, invaluable members of society. In preparation for life beyond the Sixth Form, SHSB offers a range of programmes and initiatives designed to help students choose the path that is right for them.
