Southend High School for Boys was named in the recent report of Her Majesty's Chief Inspector as one of those schools, colleges and childcare providers judged to be outstanding when they were inspected during the academic year 2005-2006. On 26 February 2007, the Headmaster attended a reception at Knebworth Park and received a certificate for the school from the Chief Inspector, Christine Gilbert. The Chief Inspector's Annual Report indicated that of the secondary schools inspected in 2005-2006, just 10% were judged outstanding.
