Homework, assessment and marking

Homework in Drama and Theatre Studies can be difficult to define in simple terms. Among others, it encompasses the following activities:

•  essays and other written tasks;

•  research assignments;

•  reading assignments;

•  rehearsals and line-learning;

•  maintenance of personal notebooks for staged productions and practical examinations;

•  development of the group project (AS) and group play production (A2);

•  extra-curricular theatre visits;

•  detailed personal notes on theatre visits (for use in the examination).

Not all of the above lend themselves to a formal system of assessment. Written tasks are marked on a scale of A to E, with unacceptable work being graded U. Effort grades range from 1 (good) to 5. Criteria reflect those of the final examination. Students whose work receives a U grade may be directed to repeat it within a discretionary time frame.

Written tasks are set at regular intervals, and in addition to their other homework assignments students receive on average one full-length essay per fortnight (slightly more in key periods such as the run-up to examinations; fewer in the run-up to a practical exam or a departmental stage production).

Finance

The department's annual capitation allowance is used for the purchase of text books, set texts and other essential play texts, video tapes, teaching support materials, subscriptions etc.
